Woohoo - one more step towards my BS - a math class for me!
#1
I am down to about 6 classes or tests to my BS. However, one of them is my math requirement in the Liberal Arts program at Excelsior. As I've noted before on this board, although I was a math major at UCSD right out of high school, I am now a hundred years older and really math phobic.

I keep looking and trying Aleks, tests, etc., to do my one math class requirement. I hadn't looked at Excelsior courses for a long time because they are so expensive. However, I was browsing through them and found this class:

Department Course # Course Name Format Start Month Term(weeks)
Math MAT-101 Mathematics for Everyday Life Online November 8

This is the math class for me!

It is going to be about $1300 for the course and book, but it's doable and it's really the only thing standing between me and my BS. The other courses/tests that I need are all doable.

I just thought I'd call it out because I know that there are lots of math phobic people like me Smile

Also, someday maybe a MS in Forensic Psychology, just for fun.   Oh, and a BS in Animal Behavior.  And, maybe when I'm 85 a PhD in something fun.

That is an interesting find.

Are you enrolled at EC? If so, consider asking your advisor if 2 other options are available, which are much less expensive. The first is the lowest math at ALEKS (beginning algebra). The second is a math course at Penn Foster that ShotoJuku has suggested in the past called Technical Math. It has been a while since we (on the forum) have checked and I don't know if these are still accepted.

It has also been about 100 years since I took any math. I am currently taking ALEKS Intermediate Algebra, and it is really pretty much a breeze. My only problem is that I am only able to devote a few hours a week to it right now, but it is not bad and it is a lot cheaper than the other options.

It seems like math is a hurdle for lots of us. Wouldn't it be great if math could be a topic that we eagerly embrace rather than dread?

Yes, I'm almost done at Excelsior. They won't accept the lower level Akeks. I had heard about Penn Foster too. However, for me, this course is really doable. I didn't have the same confidence for the other tests/courses.

For anyone who needs to know:

I double-checked with an EC advisor for the school of liberal arts about ALEKS. I was told they do still accept ALEKS Beginning Algebra to satisfy the math requirement at EC.
