If i decided to get a bachelors of cyber security with Excelsior; how many credit by exams could i take? And will the military let me commission with the above degree?
#22
It sounds like you are concerned about the major. Are you looking at Excelsior's BS in Cyber Operations or BS in Information Technology with a Cybersecurity concentration? You have none of the 51 credits needed for the Cyber Operations major. That degree is not test friendly at all. It also looks like you have none of the 48 credits needed for the Information Technology major with a concentration in Cybersecurity. That degree is also not test friendly.

I heartily echo what Sanantone said above. A more test-friendly option would be to change the depths of your BSLA degree to Psychology and Information Technology. The twelve hours would be DSST Cybersecurity 3U, DSST Management Information Systems 3U, IST101 COMPUTER CONCEPTS/APPLICATIONS 3.00 B, and the TEEX Cybersecurity series (or possibly OST219 WORD PROCESSING CONCEPT & APPL 3.00 B). That way, you would have Information Technology listed as a depth on your transcript, and Legal Studies would be covered by your associate degree.

Yes, you can commission in the military with an Excelsior degree.

That sound like a great idea!

Double check because I can't find the thread right now, but someone said that Excelsior will not accept TEEX courses. There is, however, a TECEP for Networking Technology. Straighterline also offers a C++ programming course. Then, there is Javaonline.org, but I don't know how Excelsior will transcribe their courses. Penn Foster offers Visual Basic, Intro to Programming, and Intro to Computer Programming.

Since you're inquiring about a degree that you don't already have the skill set in, my suggestion is to choose a school that allows you to take classes in the subject. I know that sounds obvious, but schools like TESC are notorious for NOT OFFERING the courses that make up the degree; people generally test out and transfer in to meet the requirements. You'll have to look at each school's catalog to figure out which ones offer the coursework vs require you find it elsewhere. Good luck!!

IT and computer science are the areas TESC has completely covered. You can complete a BSAST in IT, BA in Computer Science, and BSBA in Computer Information Systems all with TESC courses. However, these programs aren't geared toward what the OP is looking for -- cybersecurity. Since the OP is more concerned with getting the most using out of his or her credits as possible, then none of the IT/CS/CIS/MIS/cybersecurity programs at any school are going to be an option.

elprrrrr5 Wrote:Hello, I am active duty military looking to finish my Bachelors. I am still deciding between a Bachelors in Cyber Security, Political sciences or legal studies. I have an AAS in Paralegal science, and a Associate from the Community College of the Air Force in Aviation Management. I am really good with computer so that's why I am interested in Cyber security but, my dream is to become an Attorney. I am trying to finish my Bachelors online before my enlistment is over so, I have approx. 5 years. I am looking to clep/DSST/credit by exam as many courses as possible. Right now I am looking at American Military University, Excelsior College, and University of Maryland university college. What CLEPs should i take? What other institutions would you recommend?

If you have 5 years, there is no reason to go with the above colleges. Law schools look hard at the school you attended, so why not get an online degree from a better known school, or look into SOC colleges. They are supposed to help minimize the need to repeat courses that military members experience by constantly moving. Score well on the LSAT and get lots of As at a competitive school and you should be able to attend a good law school.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Commissioning these days isn't that easy. Unless you have a degree they want.
