Hi everyone,
My university is planning to retire its .edu email addresses for alumni, and I’ve been relying on mine for research conferences. Unfortunately, many conferences require a .edu email for registration or presentation purposes and do not accept personal email addresses.
Does anyone know of any universities that allow students to maintain an active .edu email address with minimal course enrollment—perhaps just a single credit hour per semester, and continue using it after graduation, possibly with alumni status?
My ultimate goal is to retain a valid .edu email address while meeting the minimum academic requirements to stay enrolled.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

All of the universities where I have graduated allow me to keep my .edu email for 1 to 3 years. None have been longer than 3 years. Even alumni no longer have lifetime emails at many colleges today. If you're attending research conferences, are you a student somewhere? If not, what is the purpose for attending research conferences? Sounds like they are looking for people active in education.

That's odd. When you tell them that you're an independent scholar, how do they respond?

The registration link won't accept personal email addresses; they likely verify affiliation even for independent researchers.

I don't need to be an active student, but I require an affiliation for reputable conferences.

Could you apply to be an adjunct instructor for one course instead of student?

University of the People bachelor has 50 terms (10 years) maximum, and 5 consecutive terms is maximum absence, so you will be good with taking 1 course (3 credits) per year. I don't think they keep the address for alumni though.

I don’t know of any that do but have wondered this myself. I was using my school email address for a couple specific things because my gmail gets way too much spam. I don’t know if they still do this, but when I signed up for a course at ASU for the universal learner, I got an ASU email address. It canceled maybe a year after that.
Possible Next up: MS Analytics
MBA ‘26
BS Sociology

WGU's policy has been lifetime alumni email, but I'm guessing you would need to actually graduate? However, at TESU, you may be able to sign up for the same TECEP once a year, but never actually take it, to remain an enrolled student.

With WGU you have to graduate from one of their programs. They have also removed some of the aluminum benefits over the last couple of years so who knows if the email account will last forever.
