Need some guidance...
#1
I just recently enrolled in Excelsior's BS Information Technology program. I haven't done any courses or exams yet, just mapping out my degree plan. Anyways, to make it short, my goal is to get accepted into a Masters in Information Technology program from a decent brick and mortar school.

Would it be a good idea for me to switch to an easier/faster degree such as Excelsior's BA/BS in Liberal Studies rather than take the BS IT route?

Which leads to my second question:
Does it matter what type of Bachelor degree you have if you have a Masters? I mean from an employer's perspective, would it look bad if I had a BS Liberal Studies + MS Information Technology? Would they think I was looking for the fast route to a BS?

Another concern I have is if I go the quicker route(BSLS), would I have any issues getting accepted into a b&m MS IT program? And if I have to take a lot of prereqs, I don't know if it would be worth it to get a BSLS.

Has anyone heard about someone getting into a MS IT program with an Excelsior BS/BA?

Thanks for your help.

I looked into getting the IT degree from EC when I enrolled, and found out that many of the courses that are required will need to be completed at EC or another traditional classroom. I primarily completed my BSBA requirements at EC through CLEP/DSST, and if I would have gone for the IT degree I would have had to take certification exams which are more expensive, and I figured it would take some more time with the EC advisors to get them applied correctly.

That being said, if your goal is a masters in IT, the requirements are going to vary by school. For example, here in Dallas, if you are going to attend University of Dallas (a private school) for a MBA, if you dont have the required courses in your bachelor's degree, they make you take "foundational" (i.e. undergrad) classes to fill those, ex: economics, statistics, accounting etc. I would imagine most schools for a masters in IT would want you to have some foundational work in programming, security, systems etc but that can vary by school, so whatever masters program you're targeting you need to look at those requirements.

If all the school requires is a bachelors from an accredited university and a GMAT above a certain level, you could be good with liberal arts or business admin. Just to illustrate the point, some dont even need a GMAT score which backs up the point of knowing the school admission policy.

Do you have a masters program targeted right now?

Pending Graduation at Excelsior University BSBA!

Earned 91 credits through CLEP / DSST in 90 days. If I can do it, SO CAN YOU!

bkahuna,

Thanks for your input. I have looked at a few possible MS IT program and most do require certain courses to be completed. I wouldn't mind as long as I get accepted I'll be happy. It's just hard finding a reputable university that accepts students without a GMAT score.
