I want to try to earn some courses for college credit through Shmoop, but I cannot find many details. What is the format of the courses? How does one earn grades? Is their a proctoring system?

No proctoring at all, but convoluted, confusing and generally cr***y courses and questions. But, hey, the price is right. And as they are adding courses, an associates degree may soon be doable through them without any proctoring for a pittance.
You can read about other people's experiences with shmoop from prior threads here on this forum.

its basically a topic split into say 5 major headings, with each of those subdivided into 10 or so sub headings. you have a quiz every 5 sub-headings or so, and a test at the end of each heading. unproctored final at the end of it
they aren't hard. links to outside sites are included in the text and test questions often come from those links, so you do have to do alot of reading. but its not hard as long as you do

It's pass/fail. You need a 70% overall to pass. After you pass, you request credit through ACE.
Some of the questions are pretty tricky and even if you read the material, it can be difficult. It depends on the course. The more factual courses are a bit easier than the subjective ones. |
